17 September 2026 – The first flash charging station in the Asia-Pacific region, and only the second in the world, to fully comply with European safety and technical standards will officially enter service at Gold Coast Shopping Mall in Tuen Mun, offering vehicle owners a more efficient and ultrafast charging experience. It is also the inaugural project to commence operation under HeDi Flash Charging Technology Co., Ltd. (和迪閃充科技有限公司), the joint venture between BYD and iCar Group. The station will accelerate the development of new energy vehicle (NEV) charging infrastructure in Hong Kong, while supporting Hong Kong’s first Five-Year Plan and the delivery of China’s dual carbon goals.
The Gold Coast flash charging station held a grand opening ceremony on 16 September. With a maximum single-connector output current of up to 1,500A, it is currently the fastest mass-produced charging pile in the world. This technological breakthrough overcomes the bottleneck imposed by grid load constraints, giving electric vehicles a refueling convenience comparable to that of conventional fuel-powered cars and delivering an entirely new “charge and go” ultrafast experience captured in the phrase “5 minutes to a ready charge, 9 minutes to a full charge.” Under normal-temperature charging conditions, an electric vehicle can charge from 10% to 70% in as little as 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes. The project reflects the shared vision and commitment of all parties involved to advancing new energy infrastructure and supporting green mobility.
Going forward, the station plans to introduce a solar power generation system in due course, integrating solar power generation, energy storage and electric vehicle charging into a single solution. This will effectively ease demand during peak electricity consumption periods, with the energy storage system flexibly balancing power supply and demand to keep the grid stable and responsive to changes in usage.
The opening ceremony coincided with the release of the Hong Kong SAR Government’s first Five-Year Plan, which proposes that Hong Kong actively align with the national “dual carbon” strategy and vigorously advance its green, low-carbon transition. As a milestone project in Hong Kong’s green infrastructure, the Gold Coast flash charging station embodies the industry’s support for Hong Kong’s first Five-Year Plan and its efforts to deliver on China’s dual carbon goals.
Mr. Ouyang Xiaocheng (歐陽小成), BYD Hong Kong Sales Director, said: “BYD upholds its ‘Three Green Dreams’ and continues to push the boundaries of technology as it drives the global transition to electrification. As the first European-standard flash charging station in the Asia-Pacific, the Gold Coast station represents an important achievement in taking BYD’s flash charging technology onto the international stage. HeDi Flash Charging Technology Co., Ltd., the joint venture established by BYD and iCar Group, will take root in Hong Kong and serve Hong Kong, working together to advance the long-term development of NEV charging infrastructure in the region. Going forward, BYD Flash Charging will continue to deepen its cooperation with local partners and bring a more efficient and safer flash charging experience to users around the world.”
The official commissioning of the Gold Coast flash charging station further improves electric vehicle charging facilities in the district and supports the development of green transport in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is actively aligning with the country’s overarching “carbon peak, carbon neutrality” strategy, setting carbon neutrality by 2050 as its long-term goal and embedding green, low-carbon and sustainable development across urban planning, infrastructure development, transport, energy supply and all other sectors, so as to drive a comprehensive green transition of society. In the future, BYD, iCar Group and their partners will continue to explore additional green energy cooperation models, working together to help Hong Kong build itself into a world-leading, green and zero-carbon smart city.
